My Two-Cents About Stem Cell Research

I usually disagree with Rush Limbaugh. His recent remarks about Michael J. Fox are just further reason why.

I'm of the opinion that Mr. Limbaugh has no edit button, and I would like to submit to Mr. Limbaugh and his supporters that maybe if he did, people wouldn't think he's such an ass.

As I'm sure many of you know, Mr. Fox suffers from Parkinson's Disease. Stem cell research -- whether you agree with it or not -- does hold the potential cure.

The biggest ethical issue about stem cell research, as I understand it, is the fact that stem cells come from aborted babies.

Before I go any further, I want to make it very plain that I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I am independant. Every conviction I hold comes from me personally and I will never be deterred unless I am given enough evidence to prove to myself that I am wrong. And I'm rarely wrong.

I don't agree with abortion. I believe that it should be used under very few circumstances. And I think that too many women -- especially younger women -- are running out and getting them when they should be taking care of their responsibilities to themselves and whatever lives they create. And I believe that each human life is important, that every one of us has a potential for greatness.

But what I also know is that stem cells don't have to come from aborted babies. During the 2004 presidential elections, the debate about it was everywhere. One day, my brother wondered why people didn't just donate their baby's umbilical cord. Well, I looked into it and apparently, there are a lot of places that you can donate your baby's umbilical cord to. So, if more people got off their selfish asses and did that, stem cell research could go along with aborted babies not even being in the equation.

Imagine a world with a cure for Parkinson's disease or paralysis. A lot of people against stem cell reasearch forget how hard these trials are to bear. They can't imagine what it would be like to watch their parents or their children suffer them. And I'd go as far as to say they don't want to imagine, because if they did, they couldn't sit back and do nothing.

So, my hope is that stem cell research can go on, using donated umbilical cords. As human beings, we have the ability and the responsibility to make the quality of life better. And that's exactly what we have to do, which brings me to a quote I would like to share:

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."-Mahatma Gandhi

And that is where I will leave you for now.
