I usually disagree with Rush Limbaugh. His recent remarks about Michael J. Fox are just further reason why. I'm of the opinion that Mr. Limbaugh has no edit button, and I would like to submit to Mr. Limbaugh and his supporters that maybe if he did, people wouldn't think he's such an ass. As I'm sure many of you know, Mr. Fox suffers from Parkinson's Disease. Stem cell research -- whether you agree with it or not -- does hold the potential cure. The biggest ethical issue about stem cell research, as I understand it, is the fact that stem cells come from aborted babies. Before I go any further, I want to make it very plain that I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I am independant. Every conviction I hold comes from me personally and I will never be deterred unless I am given enough evidence to prove to myself that I am wrong. And I'm rarely wrong. I don't agree with abortion. I believe that it should be used under very few circumstances. And I think that too many women -- especially younger women -- are running out and getting them when they should be taking care of their responsibilities to themselves and whatever lives they create. And I believe that each human life is important, that every one of us has a potential for greatness. But what I also know is that stem cells don't have to come from aborted babies. During the 2004 presidential elections, the debate about it was everywhere. One day, my brother wondered why people didn't just donate their baby's umbilical cord. Well, I looked into it and apparently, there are a lot of places that you can donate your baby's umbilical cord to. So, if more people got off their selfish asses and did that, stem cell research could go along with aborted babies not even being in the equation. Imagine a world with a cure for Parkinson's disease or paralysis. A lot of people against stem cell reasearch forget how hard these trials are to bear. They can't imagine what it would be like to watch their parents or their children suffer them. And I'd go as far as to say they don't want to imagine, because if they did, they couldn't sit back and do nothing. So, my hope is that stem cell research can go on, using donated umbilical cords. As human beings, we have the ability and the responsibility to make the quality of life better. And that's exactly what we have to do, which brings me to a quote I would like to share: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."-Mahatma Gandhi And that is where I will leave you for now.

First off, Rush Limbaugh is a right wing psycho with a huge mouth. Secondly, you could say that Michael J. Fox was "exploiting" his disease but ya know what, even if he was, there are people out there dealing with it in advanced stages above him and even on their meds (if they have meds) look like he did in that commercial or like he did before Congress. He did it to show the effects that the disease has. People only get upset because it's "shocking". Well yeah, when you've never seen someone with full blown Parkinson's, it's shocking. So is seeing someone going thru kemotherapy or laying in a hospital bed dying from pancreatic cancer. So yeah, Rush should shut his mouth and get over himself. On top of that, yeah people need to stop being lazy morons, do a little research and donate the blasted cords and then no more "stem cells = abortion" bullshit. Ok, ending comment before I go into a full blown rant.

The fact is that while I don't agree with abortion. I think that the babies that are aborted, might as well be used for it. May sound horrible, but there's not much you can do anyways once someone's already went through with an abortion.
However, I had no idea that there were places that accepted umbilical cords, I don't understand why THIS isn't in the news, so people are more aware of it. Parkinson's and paralysis both are things that should be done away with by now, and when we have the potential to do so, we should.
To be honest, if either of these things ever happen to me, I'm gonna be very bitter to the fact that someone could have helped prevent me from dealing with it long ago if they'd only stopped being so "right" and/or told people that umbilical cords could be donated.
Same as dead bodies being donated to science, the dead are the dead, even if it is tragic, such as abortion. We should use whatever means necessary to make sure that the living, for generations to come, don't deal with alot of the problems that we have to deal with presently.
That said, while i'm not 100% against them using aborted babies, horrible as it may very well be, I'd prefer people simply get out the word about the umbilical cords, but that isn't controversial enough to make lots of news stands. lol. So noone will ever get the memo.

You're right. It isn't controversial enough to make the newstands, just as the plight of AIDS in Africa isn't. But both realities are important and valid and need to be faced head on with knowledge, wisdom, and the mentality that they can and will be overcome.
But it is true. Umbilical cords can and are donated. If one fourth of American women did this, you know that the need to use aborted babies would be erraticated.
Like you, I don't agree with abortion, but in a sick way, it is -- for lack of a better word -- a comfort that they didn't die in vain, merely because their mothers were selfish idiots with their heads up their arses.
So yeah, spread the word that the umbilical cords can be donated. Maybe if enough people do it, aborted babies will stop being used all together and other people with their heads up their arses will have to think of another excuse as to why stem cell research is unethical.
