A Very Special Post

Last night, I was watching an rerun of Vicar of Dibley on PBS. It was the New Year's 2005 special.

The episode was funny, as the show always is -- in the beginning. It was Geraldine's fortieth birthday, so the villagers were trying to makes things nice for her and a running plot besides all of that was that she wanted them to write to the Prime Minister to mark the twentieth anniversery of Live Aid. (Which started out very funny as well, for many of the people on the Dibley council were convinced that Margaret Thatcher was still Prime Minister of England.)

But then the episode ended on a serious note. It seemed that some of the characters were undecided about wearing the white armbands that the vicar passed around, so she showed them a video from the Make Poverty History site. It was a clip from the film entitled "Orphans of Nkandla", which you can see if you follow that link.

The villagers watched the film and after it was over, Geraldine turned around and saw that all of them were now wearing the white armband. All of them. And it was the best birthday present they could've given her.

The film moved the characters and it moved me; I guarantee it will move all of you. And if it doesn't, then the fault lies with you.

There was a statistic at the end of the film that I wasn't aware of. It says that five people die of AIDS every minute, because they are too poor for medication. Every minute, five people die of AIDS. That's one person dying from AIDS every twelve seconds.

How could I not be aware?

But I'm aware now and so are each of you who've read this. So, we've passed the anniversery of Live AID for over a year now -- so what? Those people still need help; if you follow the Vicar of Dibley link at the beginning of this post, it will take you to a page detailing the special with a list of links to sites that'll tell you what you can do to make a difference.

So, if you don't have money of your own to donate, donate time. Even if you just spread the message, you're making a difference. Let our generation be the one to make the difference, because it's been a long time coming and these people shouldn't have to wait another minute.
