So, apparently people realized over the last day or so that Cleopatra wasn't a looker. They're basing this assumption on contemporary coins, though she wasn't described as a great beauty by ancient historians.
Now...firstly, who's to say the coin is even an accurate depiction given the crude tools? And allowances need to be made for artistic liberty, as well. Secondly, the standards of beauty have changed over the course of years, so what was considered beautiful by ancient historians might not be considered so by modern standards (and vice versa). Finally, Cleopatra's parents were brother and sister, so the girl didn't have a very deep gene pool to work with, so cut her some slack!
And about the ideal beauty changing over the course of history, I have a point. In past eras, it was considered beautiful to be dainty, with skin as white as snow. Now, mainstream American society tells you that if you weren't born dark complected, you better get yourself some self-tanner or to a tanning bed quick. But I foresee that trend will change, with time, as all trends do.
