Valentine's Update and Other Stuff

Valentine's Update

Okay, so I did what I said and stuff, but without the chocoalates -- I fell asleep without ever eating any. And that's so unlike me...ya'll just don't even know. I'm starting to accept the fact that I might be becoming a pod person.

Marie Antoinette

I watched Marie Antoinette. It was amazing and completely without gore, considering it was about a woman who had very gruesome things occur to her, her family, and many others she cared about.

I loved the music in the movie. I have to wonder if Sofia Coppola just liked it, or if it was a conscious choice to make the music relatable to modern youngin's. Either way, it rocked.

And I also loved the awkwardness during much of the early part of the movie. It had to be true to Marie Antoinette's real life. After all, imagine being a fourteen-year-old Austrian being forced into marriage with the Dauphin of France who is not much older than you. Would be a bit intimidating, no?

The movie was visually stunning as well. I absolutely adored the costumes and I loved the fact that they were true to the times. For instance: In the beginning of the movie, Marie Antoinette can be seen wearing the contouche, a simple hairdo, and on some occasions, wide paniers, which, according to marquise.de were usually considered outdated by the time, aside of very formal occasions.

During the part of the movie what I estimate to be around the time Marie Antoinette was in her early 20's, during the 1770's, her hair grew taller and even more elaborate, as was the fashion. However, you know it's the 1780's when hair styles become looser, more relaxed, and less powdered; when the waistline rises, tied with a sash, and the style in general is much less fussy (perhaps a subconscious precursor to the later Empire styles?).

I loved the coquetry exhibited in the film, especially during the part in (what I'm almost certain is) the 1770's. It was so true to the time. And I loved the partying scenes. It's something that modern people can relate to, which also helps to humanize the tragic queen. The movie basically serves to do that -- humanize her. In it, we see that she was just a regular girl, more like us than her peers (in the movie, at least -- and more down-to-earth), who didn't understand ridiculous court rituals, who clapped at operas when she oughtn't have, who cared about people, but who was not without fault.

I was, kinda iffy on the whole Axel von Fersen affair at first, because there's no concrete proof that von Fersen and Marie Antoinette ever even had an affair. But the affair was done so well and understandably in the movie, that any qualms I had disappeared. It was obvious that (in the movie, at least) Marie Antoinette didn't romantically love her husband (though I do believe she loved him platonically). I thought the marriage was as true as possible to the actual marriage, as far as I understand it. And I love how they played it -- it got the point across, without being over-the-top and ridiculous.

All in all, it was a great movie if one has an appreciation for history and pretty colours.

Snow

It's snowing outside right now! It's only snowed once since last February, and this snowfall won't stick, but all the same it's lovely. It falls every so delicately to the ground and melts. I do wish it would stick though. I don't think any child here under the age of ten has ever had a proper snow day, thank you global warming. The extremes of weather has been a bit confusing. Flowers are blooming, a few days ago it was 70f and today it was 18f and snowing! It's ridiculous. And whenever weird weather strikes, I have to blame global warming. I can't accept that this is "normal" (not that I accept anything is normal, per se, but that's a different issue altogether).
